Annual report: is the Institute measuring up?

The Institute’s 2008 Report to Members, including full financial statements is online now.  
 
As well as a sustainability review the Annual Report details how the Institute performed against its strategic goals in the last financial year. The key highlights are summarised below. 
 
Relevance to members and stakeholders

  • Delivering some 700 workshops, forums, debates and events on issues such as extended performance reporting, legally enforceable auditing standards, standard legislative framework for tax agents and anti-money laundering
  • Introducing two new conferences: on financial reporting and management accounting; and self-managed superannuation funds
  • Launching an audit manual to help auditors, a Business Software Guide and a refreshed library service
  • Expanding the Institute’s in-house training
  • Piloting a practical Graduate Development Program
Leadership and competitive positioning
  • Strengthening the Institute's lobbying, advocacy and thought leadership with involvement in:
    • The federal government's review of Australia's tax system
    • the introduction of a carbon emissions trading scheme
    • liability capping schemes
    • the government’s review of governance of self-managed superannuation funds
    • the disclosure regime for not-for-profit organisations
    • anti-money laundering legislation
    • a non-product based fee-for-service model for the financial planning industry
  • Completing 480 quality reviews of different sized practices and undertaking 259 investigations into formal complaints or other issues concerning the conduct of membersGrowth to ensure a sustainable future
    • Redesigning the practical experience component of the Chartered Accountants Program in consultation with candidates, mentors and employers
    • Broadening the entry pathways for non-accounting graduates with the Graduate Certificate of Chartered Accounting Foundations offered by Deakin University and the entrance exam for graduates with extensive on-the-job experience working for an Institute-approved employer
    • Engaging with 19,423 students compared with 9828 last year, through careers marketing events and initiatives
    • Securing places for 210 first-year students in more than 100 accounting organisations during the 2007/2008 summer break
    Global positioning
    • Gaining recognition for the Chartered Accountants Program and reciprocal membership with institutes in Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa, England and Wales, Ireland, Scotland and South Africa
    Fit for the future
    • Successfully completing the sale of the York Street premises, relocating to Erskine Street in Sydney and negotiating new leases of premises in Brisbane and Canberra.
