Choosing keywords
For best results, it's important to choose your keywords wisely. Keep these tips in mind:

Try the obvious first. If you're looking for AASB 1020, enter "aasb 1020" rather than "accounting standards".

Use words likely to appear on a site with the information you want. "ca print advertisements" gets better results than "Information on promoting my business in newspapers".

Make keywords as specific as possible. "professional independence exposure draft" gets more relevant results than "exposure drafts".

Don't use "and" queries
By default, the search engine only returns pages that include all of your search terms. There is no need to include "and" between terms. Keep in mind that the order in which the terms are typed will affect the search results. To restrict a search further, just include more terms. For example, if "exposure drafts" doesn't work, simply type "exposure draft 109".

Automatic exclusion of certain characters
The search engine ignores certain characters, for example: @ " ! $ + &

Automatic exclusion of some words
The search engine ignores the following words:

  • and
  •
  • or
  •
  • not
Capitalisation
Searches are NOT case sensitive. For example, searches for "ramsay report", "Ramsay Report", and "rAmSaY RePorT" will all return the same results.

Word variations (wildcards, stemming etc)
Wildcard search – use an * for the beginning or end of a word. For example, "exam*" will return results like "exam", "example" and "examination" etc
Use a ? as a substitute for unknown characters. For example, if you can't remember if it is "independence" or "independance", use "independ?nce"

Relevancy of search results
By default, the search engine looks for an exact match of the whole phrase. If no results are found, it will then look for all words within a certain proximity of each other (within 5 words of each other, within the same sentence, within the same paragraph, within 50 words of each other).
